Food Insecurity

The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. This can be a temporary situation for a family or can last a long time. More than 34 million people, including 9 million children experience food insecurity in the United States.

Hinckley Area Food Pantry is working to combat food insecurity in our local community.

Food Pantry

Hinckley Area Food Pantry operates as a client choice food pantry. We are set up like a grocery store, where you can come in and shop! This allows our clients the freedom to get what they need and can use.

Shopping the pantry is by appointment only.

Grow Mobile

Every other month, the Hinckley Area Food Pantry hosts the DeKalb County Community Gardens Grow Mobile mobile pantry. (They are in Waterman on alternating months!) This is an opportunity for community members to get food outside of the pantry's normal operating hours. Grow Mobile usually offers additional dry groceries, as well as fresh produce and breads. There are no residency or income requirements to visit the Grow Mobile pantry.

Christmas Giving Tree

Friends of the Hinckley Library host a Giving Tree for HAFP by collecting the wishes of our clients and hanging them on the tree. Community members can come choose ornaments and purchase a gift to make someone's Christmas wish come true! We appreciate their help in making our clients' holidays a bit brighter!

(Client names are never shared to protect your privacy.)

Birthday Bags

Volunteers from the Big Rock Library and Hinckley First United Methodist Church provide birthday bags to be given to our clients during the month of their birthday. Each bag contains a cake mix, frosting, candles and a gift. Some bags contain party napkins and plates.

We believe no one should go without a cake and a gift on their birthday!
